Shipping and delivery
1. This took a little while to come after ordering which is normal because it is a popular item. The local delivery company didn't call me before heading to my house with this, which was very inconvenient because I wasn't home. Thankfully he was able to wait until someone could sign for it. Again, not MAXUM's fault, but something to watch out for.
2. Everything was packed in a big wooden crate. Nothing was damaged and packing job by MAXUM was very good.
3. Oddly enough, shortly after I ordered MAXUM contacted me that a few parts were missing, and in particular that there was an issue with the way the pulley brackets attach to the top of the machine so they would send me new brackets to correct the issue. It wasn't a huge deal but it did make me feel like the product wasn't quite ready for primetime AND the replacement parts took many weeks to finally arrive.
Build quality.
1. This is a beefy, 11 gauge machine that is mostly very well made. I question some of the tolerances in manufacturing as my pivot arms don't exactly align perfectly when they are turned completely inward. It's not a deal breaker and I've asked MAXUM for a replacement arm (haven't heard back yet) but for a machine this expensive you expect a certain level of quality.
2. Likewise, one of the smith machine sleeves is a little too big for some of my olympic plates, again a tolerance issue, working with MAXUM to correct.
3. The welds are pretty good and fit and finish is nice, but I would have liked to see better quality attachments on some of the pieces. The connecting pins would be nicer if they were rounded and chrome, right now the paint is slowly flaking off some of mine.
4. Some of the attachments are amazing. I particularly like the spotter arms and the center lower mount for center low pulley work. But some of the other attachments are meh, like the D handles which broke very soon after using them, and the T-bar row attachment which just seems kind of cheap and an afterthought
Versatility and features
1. This is where this thing shines. There’s so much you can do on this with the adjustable pulley arms and attachments.
2. I love how the weight stacks include weight horns. That’s a very nice feature and much more convenient than having an additional weight pin to put on
3. The smith bar has really good travel and you can even do hip thrusts with it if you put a pad on the floor
4. The pull-up bar could be better. Because this unit is shorter than the last version, pullups are really not that great on this. I got an aftermarket bar that is higher and much better.
Overall this is a great machine with incredible versatility but quality control could be better, and overall build doesn’t feel premium in certain areas. I’m also still waiting for MAXUM to correct a few issues.
Go ahead, these are a good buy!
