Why choose a Functional Trainer
If you could only buy one piece of home gym equipment, a Functional Trainer would be it. The cable and pulley system lets you pull, push, rotate, squat, and isolate from any angle - exercises that no fixed machine can replicate.
MAXUM Functional Trainers go beyond a standard cable machine. Every unit integrates a lat station, squat or power rack, pull-up station, and dual weight stacks into one compact unit. Whether you're training for strength, fat loss, endurance, or rehabilitation, it adapts to your goals without you having to change machines.
How to choose the right Functional Trainer for your home gym
Here's what separates a great functional trainer from an average one:
- Weight stack size: Look for at least 150 lbs per stack. MAXUM offers 220 lbs per side - 440 lbs combined - adjustable in 10 lb increments.
- Pulley ratio: 1:1 ratio means you feel 100% of the stack weight - best for strength. 2:1 means you feel 50% - better for rehab and high-rep work.
- Steel gauge: 11-gauge steel is the commercial standard. MAXUM X/SX2 models use 3x3 11-gauge throughout.
- Cable quality: Look for mil-spec aircraft-grade cables rated to at least 1,000 lbs tensile strength.
- Squat rack vs power rack config: Squat rack is more compact. Power rack gives full four-post safety cage for heavy solo lifting.
- Floor space: Plan for a minimum 8x8ft footprint and 7–8ft ceiling clearance for overhead cable work.

The Functional Trainer X2 and SX2 are built with 3X3 11-gauge steel. All others use 12-gauge steel. Uprights are different dimensions.
The Functional Trainer includes dual 220 lb, fully enclosed weight stacks, offering a total of 400 pounds in weight capacity. These are adjustable in 11 lb increments to ensure you have the right weight for your workout. For those who need a little extra, the included weight-plate horns allow you to add weight to customize your workout.
For each machine, weight capacity is available in the specifications section.
The Functional Trainer engages your entire body, promoting strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, and mobility. The workouts mimic everyday life, engaging multiple muscles at once. Functional training also strengthens and conditions your body for real-world movements, and provides the flexibility to change your workout routine, keeping you motivated and helping you reach your goals.
The Functional Trainer is great for general fitness, rehabilitation, and even athletic performance. It offers:
- Versatility: Perform various exercises targeting different muscle groups. The cable system and pulleys offer flexibility to pull, push, squat, lunge, twist, and more on one machine.
- Real-Life Movements: Mimic everyday movements, such as squatting to pick something off the floor or reaching to grab something off a shelf. The Functional Trainer can help improve your balance, coordination, and agility.
- Low Impact: Get the workout without the pain. Many Functional Trainer exercises are low-impact, placing less stress on your joints.
- Scalability: Easily adjust the exercises' weight, resistance, and difficulty to match your fitness level.
- Minimal Footprint: Save space in your home gym with a relatively compact Functional Trainer.
- Safety: Stay safe while working out. The Functional Trainer’s cable system allows for controlled movements, while the weight stackers eliminate the risk of dropping weights.
MAXUM Fitness offers both squat rack and power rack Functional Trainers.
The weight ratio refers to the relationship between the amount of weight on the stack and the amount of resistance you actually feel when performing an exercise. The pulley system determines the weight ratio.
Your ideal weight ratio will depend on your fitness goals and the exercises you want to perform.
For strength training, a 1:1 ratio is typically best. But, if your focus is improving your movement patterns, a 2:1 ratio or higher is more suitable.
Yes, as with any workout, it’s important to use the equipment with care. To avoid unnecessary risk, read the product manual and follow instructions for safe use. Bring a spotter in if necessary.
