Patent Pending Articulating Functional Trainer Arms
The patent pending Mutant Arms take our articulating functional trainer arms to the next level. Now articulating both horizontally and vertically, they let you set the perfect starting position for any exercise. Go wide for chest flys and cable crossovers, bring them together for lat pulldowns and seated rows, or angle them up and down for presses, pulls, and everything in between. An additional attachment point delivers a true 1:1 ratio, so the weight you load is the weight you feel.
Optional Bolt on Smith Machine
Compact yet powerful, the optional XSA Smith Machine Attachment bolts directly to the frame and delivers the guided safety of a Smith machine without sacrificing your rack’s versatility.

Stainless Steel Front Uprights
The X1 comes standard with stainless steel 3x3 11 gauge front uprights to keep your rack always looking new. Some of the most well respected power rack brands offer 3x3 11 gauge stainless uprights as a premium option for a reason so if someone says stainless steel uprights are inferior, then they don't know squat (pun intended).
Dual 220 lb Weight Stacks
The included dual 220 lb weight stacks in 10 lb increments ensures you will have the weight you need for all your functional trainer exercises. And for those that need a little more, the included weight plate horns allow you to add weight plates to the stack.

Strap Safety Arms and UHMW Sandwich J-hooks
The unique and hefty optional strap safety arms gives you your bar a soft landing when you need it. And the included J-hooks use UHMW sandwiched between two thick steel plates to protect your bars finish and knurl.

Everything inside the crate is individually wrapped .. safe to say that damage in-transit is nearly impossible.
Everything is also clearly labeled on the wrapping
The crate itself - it's easier to open than i made it. There are a bunch of metal tabs that you can simply pry the tab up, then the metal strips come off much much easier.
The plywood that makes up the crate - I was able to reuse some of that to make a box and a super-thick gym shelf (stacked-and-glued 4 pieces together)
INSTALLATION
It's a lot of equipment - it's a long set-up process, basically a full day especially considering i probably put at least an hour of thought into final placement before installing the weight stacks - it becomes "the immovable object" after that step.
After installing, I was left with 4 plastic saucer shaped things that I don't remember seeing instructions for .. turns out they go on the leg roller to hold the pads in place.
CUSTOMER SERVICE (my reasons for contacting them were just for questions)
Via phone, customer service is fast and excellent
Via email, plan on waiting a while for a response
STORAGE
Now that it's installed ... man that's a lot of stuff that comes with it. I've got a lot of it stored on the rack itself.
I'm storing the spotter arms and my monolift arms on the bottom back crossmember, just with the pin only, leaving it hanging off the back so i have room for all 4
I finally have most everything off the floor, the foot plate i think will stay on the floor, maybe even permanently installed on the rack once i get the Mutant Arms.
I set my weight horns up a bit weird.
I tested the weight horns on the stack to see if the plate storage gets in the way.
It's a mixed bag, but i found a setup that works
I put my 45's on the lowest possible pin, and (since they are low) they do not get in the way.
If i put the 25's above the 45's AND put a 25 on the stack horns, then they would collide.
So, I oriented the weight horn for the 25's pointing towards the back wall.
With that setup, it's really close - it depends on the diameter of your 25's and 10's
But as long as i use my smallest-profile 25's on the stack, then it works.
FIRST WORKOUT THOUGHTS
The cables are offset from the upright by a couple of inches .. so no matter where the trolley/arms are on the rack, the cables don't get in the way of putting attachments on (so that's good)
I have forgotten to raise the arms up when setting up for something like Bench Press - so it does work fine like that, but i still prefer the trolley above and out of harms way.
The arms are easy to swivel with one hand if needed
The spotter arms can be a real tight fit on the rack - I'm hoping that the UHMW will wear down a bit over time though.
At first, I was not a huge fan of the straps on the spotter arms, but now that I'm using them they are perfectly fine.
Cable operation is super smooth and the end of the arm swivels, so no matter where you go, the pulley mechanism rotates to "follow" you
I have not used their provided method of connecting the 2 arms together. That never looked like a good idea to me, so I bought a 12" spreader from Force6Fitness for connecting the 2 stacks for lat pulldowns. That works great.
(though i think the Mutant Arms won't require that because they are longer and look like they come close enough together to use a carabiner to combine them)
I use the same when i just want to use two attachments on one arm with a bit of separation - like front raises, leg curls, leg extensions, etc.
For low rows, I tried use an anchor strap and a single-pulley (plus a small pulley in between those 2 to attach my handle to) to convert the stack to 1:1 ... it works, however i had to get a longer cable to get full range of motion.
It also takes a while to set up.
Again -the Mutant Arms will eliminate the need to do this
HEIGHT
I have the 88.5" model X1. I'm 6'3" tall and i was a little worried that the lat pulldowns would be too short to get a good stretch. It's not a problem.
I use a stool that is a little shorter than a standard bench, but I think even on a bench i would get a good stretch - and certainly with the Mutant Arms it's got plenty of height.
For pullups, i do have to bend my knees to get a full stretch - but i think that's true for most racks on the market.
ATTACHMENTS
There are a lot of attachments .. not gonna lie, I don't use them all. There are so many, I'm sure I'll forget to mention one that I do use.
Using the center-post attachment to set up the leg roller for lat pulldowns - that is annoying enough to set up that i avoid it if i can.
I usually just wear a weighted vest since I already have it and it goes on in seconds.
It is quicker to set that up for low rows, however (have i said this before?) the Mutant arms will eliminate that need
I do use the low-row footplate, but i put it on the rack rather than using the center post , but this means I have to do my hack to get the stack to 1:1
My shoulder's don't like Dips, but my son likes the Dip attachment
The lat pulldown attachment is ok, but it's a little narrower than my other one so i don't use the Maxum lat pulldown attachment.
The short straight-bar attachment is light and comfortable - i use that for tricep pushdowns
My favorite attachment is actually the landmine - I've always had a floor landmine. But the Maxum one goes on the upright, and being able to set it at any height is really helpful.
I use it for belt squats and I set it at a height in the middle of the range of motion - that way I'm getting as close to 100% of the weight as possible.
The included D-handles surprised me too. I like to do lateral raises using the cable plus a light dumbell in my hand as well.
The straps on these d-handles are nice and wide so it doesn't dig in (i push the handle out of the way and wrap the strap around my hand while holding a dumbbell).
Also having 2 rings on the handle gives me options without being annoying and in the way like similar ones with a really long strap and several rings.
The Double D Row handle is good too. It's a little wider than the one I already had and i like Maxum's better, so I've switched to using this one.
There are 2 attachments intended for the leg roller, the short one is for use with the center-post attachment, the longer one goes directly on an upright.
I've found that the size is perfect to fit a Preacher Curl attachment that i still have from an old Weider bench press, using the long attachment i can do standing preacher curls either with dumbells OR using the cable for resistance.
OTHER THOUGHTS
This crams a LOT of stuff into a really small footprint!!
The weight horns on the weight stacks are not only good for going heavier than the 220lb stack, but they are great for micro loading too.
I have the original arms, but I've pre-ordered the Mutant Arms
The only con i have to say about this rack are related to the arms not moving vertically. Not only do the Mutant Arms solve that, but they add 1:1 weight ratio option as well.
I bought a straight-bar attachment that is 46" long that attaches to both cables (not Maxum brand, they were sold out at the time).
I really like that, you can sub the cable stacks in for many free-weight type exercises that start with the weight low (shoulder shrugs, calf raises, glute bridge, etc)
The only real downside (this isn't a con to this rack, it applies to any FT/Rack) is that it crams a lot of stuff into a small footprint - so if you do a lot of supersets,
you may find that exercise 1 setup gets in the way of exercise 2 setup. I do a lot of supersets, so i just have to plan accordingly.
Very high. No manufacturing defects that I can find. Frame and weight stacks were aligned correctly out of the box. No rust, burrs, bent parts, or damaged welds. Every component was individually wrapped and arrived without shipping damage. Once assembled, everything looks clean and intentional. All connectors fit properly in the rack holes. Based on build quality alone, I have a hard time seeing where REP or Rogue would justify a meaningful price increase.
Utility
Extremely flexible machine. The articulating arms and included adapters make this far more than a basic functional trainer. The only real limit is creativity. Included cable handles are better than expected and more than sufficient for a home gym user. My unit has 26 mm holes, so compatibility with true 1” aftermarket accessories should be straightforward. There are newer arms coming with 1:1 ratio and vertical articulation, but I do not expect to upgrade, as I would rather not partially disassemble the rack.
Customer service
This is clearly a small operation. Staff are friendly and helpful, but communication is casual and sometimes blunt. During my order there were some growing pains that affected shipping, and updates could have been more proactive. In hindsight it’s clear they were addressing issues, but I did have to follow up to stay informed.
Setup and storage
Assembly is straightforward but realistically requires two people. Instructions are provided as a manual plus supplemental photo guides; merging these would improve clarity. I missed one minor step and had to backtrack, but nothing serious. Expect a lot of packaging. Nearly every part is individually wrapped, roughly 35 pieces, so bring large trash bags. Storage for accessories is left to the user. I added pegboard for handles and am likely adding a spare 3×3 upright to organize the remaining adapters.
Overall
Excellent hardware and value. If you are comfortable working with a smaller company and don’t need white-glove communication, the product itself is very strong.
The only couple of things I feel could improve were the installation manuals and the plate storage pegs. The manuals have a few minor steps missing, so a friend of mine and I had to repeat a few steps during installation. But overall the manuals are ok and the steps are self-explanatory. The pegs for weight plate storage were difficult to tighten as the pegs themselves turn when you fasten the bolts. I had to apply my entire body weight to resist the pegs from rotating while my friend tightened the bolts. These were the only minor things that I wish were better. But overall, I love this machine and would definitely anyone to buy the X1, or the X2 if they had more space.
Only gripes would be the pull up attachment grips are a little to thick and can be slippery. Also, the instructions for assembly were very sparse although I was able to do it on my own over about 5 hours. Would help to have an impact drill and you will need to purchase what I believe is a 30 mm socket which required a trip to a Home Depot. A video would have been helpful.
Overall, excellent purchase. Very happy!
The product was delivered on time in a wooden crate with everything carefully wrapped and nothing was damaged in transit. I suggest getting a friend and a 24mm and 36mm socket wrench to assemble it, and double check that the rack is square and the crossbeam attachment goes on smoothly BEFORE installing the weight stacks.
The quality of the rack and cable pulley system is extremely high and the pulleys are beautifully smooth. The trolley attachments for the pulley arms fit well and (after adjusting the pulley system to remove excess tension) they move up and down smoothly. The stainless steel uprights look great. (I find myself popping down the gym every so often just to admire this machine!) It comes standard with a lot of attachments, all are lined with UHMW plastic to prevent your rack from getting scratched. While you can certainly find more premium attachments, the included ones are all perfectly functional and give you the opportunity to see which ones you actually use without spending a lot of extra money. I am 5'1"" so I have more than enough room for seated lat pulldowns but taller people might prefer the taller rack if they have the ceiling height. Being short, I find the lowest position of the pulley arms doesn't give me a lot of room to pull up from, but the included single-pulley attachment makes up for it, allowing me to set up a low pulley on one of the feet.
Maxum's customer service was extremely responsive and graciously answered all my questions throughout the process.
Overall, I am more than happy with my purchase. This product is extremely high quality and offers excellent value compared to other available options. For Canadians, this is also a great buy-local option. I highly recommend it!
It took me about 3-4 hours to assemble with a helper stepping in during a couple steps where it helps to have four hands. Be warned that you will need to have a 36mm socket and wrench on hand. Yes, 36mm.
Now assembled, the unit is absolutely solid and the pulleys are buttery smooth. Having the articulating arms at their widest settings allow for a cable cross that rivals commercial gyms. At 5’8, I get full range of motion for biceps curls at the lowest setting. Sitting down on the ground for seated rows at the lowest position is also fine (same with my wife at 5’6).
Only issue is I need to figure out how to get enough grip on the plate pegs to actually tighten the 36mm locking nuts adequately. It may require an impact gun.
Extremely happy with the purchase and my wife is actually ok with the purchase now that she’s had a chance to try it out. Bonus.
